Microgreens are considered a"functional food" that promotes health and prevents disease due to the fact that they contain high concentrations of nutrients, up to 40 times that of their mature version.
Less is definitely more, these little plants not only contain concentrated amounts of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, they also contain enzymes that help with their digestion and the digestions of other foods.
Intense flavour is another benefit of these little plants, ranging from mild and tangy to spicy or peppery with concentrated nutrient content.
Combine all these benefits with Nourishing Hub's unique approach to grow and deliver pesticide and herbicide free greens while reducing Time-To-Table from harvest (*) and you see why you should include microgreens in your daily diet.
What are microgreens?
Microgreens are young vegetable greens, harvested when they are about 3-7 cm tall and typically between 10-20 days old depending on species. In essence microgreens are the very young versions of any of the mature species we are familiar with today, they are not a new exotic group of vegetables we never heard of before.
Examples of some popular microgreen species are:
Rocket (Arugula)
Broccoli
Radish
Coriander (Cilantro)
Kale
Chard
Help kids get the veg and nutrients they need
Kids and veg go together like pajamas and honeymoon - they don't!
Let's look at the 2 biggest challenges parents face when trying to get their kids to eat veg:
The serving size is intimidating. You have to serve a lot of these greens in order for your kids to get the nutrients they need. By dishing up a lot the kids immediately resist having to eat ALL THOSE VEG
Loss of nutrition due to cooking. Unless every meal is some sort of a soup, you lose a lot of nutrients due to boiling, baking and frying (**). Because of this loss in nutrient you have to add more to the plate, adding more to the plate leads to point 1 above and the whole cycle repeats.
With microgreens parents now have the option to add these greens to their children's favourite sandwich, lasagna, bolognaise or pizza and because these greens are bursting with flavour , making it an inviting option for kids to eat, you do not have to add all kinds of sugar loaded sauces to make it more palatable for your child.
These greens are so flavourful our kids and the kids of our friends love to eat handfuls of the stuff and we always serve it alongside other snacks at socials.
Easy to include in every meal
The small size of the greens and the variety of flavours, you can now easily include them in every meal which means you can realise the benefit of these greens every time you have something to eat.
Due to the wide variety of flavours and textures every cooked meal, salad or sandwich can be complimented by adding a sprinkle or handful of these amazing greens.
If you are an on-the-go person a small serving of these can be blended with your favourite juice to give it a new zesty, spiced up flavour twist and if you do not have time to blend your favourite juice, simply bite into a pinch-full of these greens on the way to the front door.
Always fresh
Although microgreens have a great shelf life one additional benefit is that you can buy and keep these live, still rooted and uncut, you only harvest them when needed. This means you get the freshest most nutritious greens possible.
Nourishing Hub does not only grow crunchy fresh, nutrient dense, pesticide free mature greens but also a great variety of microgreens. We make it possible for you to get the most out of our greens - locally!
